A downside to buying OEM car parts is the actual fact that they are generally a lot more expensive that other styles of auto parts. Whereas other car parts may be around $50, the same automobile parts that are bought from the OEM may be around $150. The price makes all the difference, too, when mending your car, so it may not automatically behoove you to buy OEM auto parts.
Alternatively, the other kind of auto parts that can be purchased when repairing a car is after-market vehicle parts, or car parts that are created for the same car by third-parties. These auto parts are generally much much easier to run into, and more auto repair outlets and shops generally bring after-market vehicle parts as opposed to OEM car parts. That's one of the big advantages to buying those types of automobile parts, but another is they are much less expensive than OEM car parts. This is touched on in the last paragraph about OEM parts, but after-market vehicle parts are usually 50% or more less than the original manufacturer's car parts.
With that said, it is very up to the person and the situation when the car is being restored. Many people choose OEM vehicle parts because they will be the safest kind of parts to go with, but quarrels for third-party vehicle parts are because they are much cheaper tend to be accessible.
